Macao Orchestra, formed in 2001, is running under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government. In September 2008 Lu Jia started his tenure as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestra, initiating several concert series in each season and presenting to the public, comprehensively and systematically, both Western and Chinese programmes, thereby stimulating the interest of a growing public.

The Orchestra collaborates regularly with numerous internationally renowned musicians, conductors and ensembles including Krystian Zimerman, Leonidas Kavakos, Clara Jumi Kang, Lang Lang, Louis Schwizgebel-Wang, Sarah Chang, Plácido Domingo, Mario Brunello, Ning Feng, Arvo Volmer, The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Scottish Ballet and etc. In addition, Macao Orchestra has been regularly invited to perform in Mainland China and overseas, performing in more than 30 cities in China, Europe, Korea, Japan, etc. The Orchestra successfully presented high quality concerts through its refined performance style and professional level, becoming a symbol of Macao’s prosperity as an international cultural city.

** One solo piece and five excerpts from the repertoire list. Please note that solo piece is not required for the principal timpani position.

Audition Procedure:


1. Macao Orchestra’s audition committee will screen all valid applications.
2. If your application is to be shortlisted, Macao Orchestra will make contact via Email in November, and will arrange your live audition in January 2019 in Macao. Live audition includes solo performance and playing with the Macao Orchestra section.
3. Candidates who are shortlisted from the live audition, will be invited to join one of Macao Orchestra concerts between March and June 2019, whose performance during the rehearsals and concert will be considered as the final round of the audition. Travel allowance and accommodation will be provided, but other service fees will NOT be offered.
4. Please note that Macao Orchestra will NOT return all submitted materials to candidates. The personal data collected through the application is to be used only for the purpose of evaluating and assessing the suitability of the applicant for the post.

1. Terms and conditions of employment:

a) Full Time Musicians – Salary (Gross / in Macao currency MOP / per month)
※ Principal Musicians: MOP37,027.9
※ Tutti Musicians: MOP29,313.8
※ Salary tax: please find the information from the official web-site of The Financial Service Bureau of Macao S.A.R.


A one-year contract will be provided for the first year. After that, a one-year or a two-years contract will be provided.
All full time orchestra musicians are entitled to housing subsidy and family subsidy (if applicable).


The performance season runs from early September through to the end of July of the following year. The first 30 days of the first contract tenure will constitute a probation period.


2. Eligibility

Macao Orchestra welcomes applications from experienced professional musicians.
i. Completed at least one tertiary level musical degree (e.g. Bachelor of Music) in an institution of international repute.
ii. Be able to participate in English-language rehearsals.
iii. All other conditions being equal, preference will be given to holders of Macao Identity Cards.
