Ryan Broughton
A native of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Ryan Broughton began his musical journey with his grandfather, a former conductor and principal trombone of the local Salvation Army band, who taught Ryan to play cornet before joining the local Salvation Army band, where he eventually moved to trombone.
Ryan’s earliest orchestral experience was with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Youth Orchestra, where he quickly decided that it was what he wanted to do. A scholarship allowed Ryan to begin studies with Peter Collins (bass trombone, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra).
Ryan attended the University of Toronto and the Glenn Gould School, studying with Jeffrey Hall (former bass trombone, Toronto Symphony Orchestra), David Pell (principal trombone, National Ballet of Canada), and Gordon Wolfe (principal trombone, Toronto Symphony Orchestra). Additional studies were undertaken with Robert Hughes (former bass trombone, London Symphony Orchestra), Brian Hecht (utility trombone, Dallas Symphony Orchestra), and Nathan Zgonc (acting principal trombone, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra).
Ryan has performed with such groups as the Grammy Award-winning rock band Evanescence, Hannaford Street Silver Band, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, London Symphonia, Toronto Jazz Orchestra, Composers Collective Big Band, Artenium Brass Band, Intrada Brass of Oakville, and Incandescent Cat-dude.
Ryan is pleased to be joining the Macao Orchestra in 2025.
