For the season’s closing concert, the Macao Orchestra offers three works by Beethoven varying in familiarity with our audiences. The Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus came into being in 1801 as a ballet commission, staged in Vienna’s famed Burgtheater for more than 40 performances. Cast in the classical mode, it stands in contrast to the composer’s only Violin Concerto and his final symphony, where an expanding sense of space encompasses everyone in the concert hall. When soloists and chorus join together at the end of the Symphony No. 9, an entirely new world unfolds.
