Sports and music share the DNA of pageantry, consummate skills and steadfast determination. Music Director and Principal Conductor Lio Kuokman launches the programme with John Williams’s Fanfare and Theme, written for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The “concerto” slot is none other than Andy Akiho’s Ricochet, featuring real-life ping pong champions, a violinist and a percussionist. This contemporary work now arrives in Macao after having already travelled the world. Rounding out the programme is 2008 Beijing Olympic Opening Music Director Chen Qigang’s Wu Xing—in praise of the Chinese Five Elements—and Maestro Lio’s newly arranged Nutcracker Suite. In fact, what is ballet? A highly synchronised artform mixing music with the physicality of sports!
