After announcing his retirement in 1890, Johannes Brahms was inspired by the German clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld to write chamber music that included the clarinet and composed the Clarinet Trio, the Clarinet Quintet and the two Clarinet Sonatas. The Trio in A minor Op. 114 for Clarinet, Cello and piano – featuring the Clarinet – was written in the summer of 1891 and was privately performed by Richard Mühlfeld on the 24th November 1891 in Meiningen and then again publicly on the 12th December in Berlin that same year. Scholars claim this work as part of the rebirth for the composer after having declared that his String Quintet in G Major was to be his final work in 1890. The Trio in E-flat Major for Horn, Violin and Piano was composed in 1866 and is full of reminiscences of family members and the old life clearly described by the beautiful mellow sound of the horn. This concert provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy and discover Brahms’ exceptional contribution to chamber music.
