In addition to possessing supreme technical skills, Russian pianist Alexei Volodin is among the most sensitive and erudite players of his generation. A worthy interpreter of Beethoven needs a profound understanding of classical form and style as well as a full awareness of that exciting historical moment at the dawn of romanticism. In many ways, Beethoven’s third piano concerto is a harbinger of a new era, though still fitting comfortably with the old. Another “No. 3” by Beethoven, the “Eroica”, has been a symphonic stalwart for centuries, exciting audiences new and old with its propelling rhythms, intricate counterpoint and striking melodies.
