A double-symphonic evening pairing Beethoven’s first with Bruckner’s last makes perfect sense. Bruckner, a devout Catholic, considered his symphonies extensions of Beethoven’s oeuvre. Often misunderstood as “conservative”, the younger composer’s three completed symphonic movements that constitute his Symphony No. 9 (dedicated to “the beloved God”) are innovative in their own way.
