A double-symphonic evening pairing Beethoven’s first with Bruckner’s last makes perfect sense. These two works, written almost a century apart, presents a clear thread connecting the two Austro-German composers and the tradition of “absolute music”. Bruckner, a devout Catholic, considered his symphonies extensions of Beethoven’s oeuvre. Often misunderstood as “conservative”, the younger composer’s three completed symphonic movements that constitute his Symphony No. 9 (dedicated to “the beloved God”) are innovative in their own way. Witness this monumental feat of the Macao Orchestra under the baton of Music Director and Principal Conductor Lio Kuokman.
