Beethoven: “Fidelio” Overture
Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4 in G Major, Op. 58
Schumann Symphony No.2 in C Major, Op. 61
Beethoven’s only opera Fidelio went through a decade of revisions, its overture having had four different incarnations. This concert features the final version of the overture, completed in such haste it was not performed at the opera’s premiere but rather on its second night. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 has long been praised for its grace and poise, distinguished for having the soloist introduce the theme alone before the orchestra enters. Schumann’s Symphony No. 2—inspired by Schubert’s C Major Symphony—reveals a mature composer aware of his own place in the Austro-German tradition following Beethoven’s footsteps.
