Vienna has long been considered the world’s musical capital. Barely a year after Mozart’s death in 1791, Beethoven became a permanent resident. For this all-Beethoven concert, led by Vienna-born conductor Sascha Goetzel, the Macao Orchestra performs three works composed during the first decade of the 19th century: “Leonore” Overture No. 1 (discarded by the composer before the staged premiere of Fidelio, his sole opera initially entitled Leonore), Symphony No. 5 (“Fate”) and the Piano Concerto No. 5 (“Emperor”) featuring soloist Barry Douglas, laureate of the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. The latter two works chronicle a momentous and difficult period when the composer was already suffering a decline in hearing. Yet his music remains defiant in the face of adversity.
