Trained as a pianist from a very young age, Beethoven established himself by his 20s as a gifted virtuoso in Vienna. Finding fame as a composer took more effort, but performing as soloist in his First Piano Concerto in 1798 in Prague was certainly a decisive step in the right direction. By his Symphony No. 6 more than a decade later, Beethoven had to contend with hearing loss, despite expressing such tranquil sentiments about the unpredictability of Nature. This concert marks another homecoming: Macao-born pianist Hoi Leong Cheong returns to play again with the very orchestra where he made his debut at age 9.
