It’s a rare experience to hear all of Mozart’s five violin concertos performed live in succession within a few days! Though we appreciate the illusion of effortlessness displayed on stage, we should also remember that a Classical concerto is a constant give and take between soloist and orchestra, a call and response of friends engaging in heartfelt, pleasant conversation. Mozart was celebrated as a wunderkind on his grand musical tour of Europe with his family, writing his first symphony while in London. In his Symphony No. 40, an “essential classic” in the orchestral canon, we appreciate Mozart’s depth and craft in handling multiple voices and extending the orchestral palette, a sophistication that the composer honed in the final years of his life.
