Programme
Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Major, Op. 23
Schumann: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 97 “Rhenish”
Among the most celebrated keyboard concertos, Tchaikovsky’s “First” has long been an audience favourite, with fingers flying right from the majestic opening chords. The passionate relationship between soloist and orchestra is more like lovers than just good friends, especially in the harmonically rich middle movement. Schumann composed his “Rhenish” Symphony while living near the scenic River Rhine. Written in just over a month in 1850, this five-movement work contains tunes reminiscent of folk songs, and the fourth movement (the unconventional addition) was purportedly written after the composer’s visit to the architecturally marvellous Cologne Cathedral.
