For the new year, the Macao Orchestra invites international fado superstar Mariza to join in celebration. This Portuguese vocal genre has long been a staple here, and the 1990 visit by the legendary Amália Rodrigues remains a vivid memory. Fado touches the heart and gives us solace, speaking to the realities of fate and everyday life. It draws on musical styles not only from the Iberian peninsula but also immigrant cultures from Latin America and Africa. Mariza, who rose to prominence at the memorial for Rodrigues in 1999, returns to Macao to open our hearts to both old and new saudades (“yearnings”). This will be an enchanting evening to remember.
