Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 in E-flat Maior , WAB 104 “Romantic”
Many facets of romantic orchestration and multiple layers of emotion permeate this programme, with two monumental works consisting of four movements each. Edward Elgar wrote his Cello Concerto in 1919 following the First World War, which many see as a lament for a lost world filled with yearning and defiant despair. Bruckner’s “Romantic” Symphony remains the composer’s most accessible work, where brass and percussion shine like beacons of light. As with his other works, Bruckner made revisions after its initial performance, thus refining his vision. Both works are epic musical journeys striking at our hearts and opening our minds.
