Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47
Mahler: Symphony No. 4 in G Major
This concert will be cherished for some time because of child prodigy HIMARI’s debut. Sibelius’s Violin Concerto was composed in 1903, subsequently revised after a disappointing premiere. Now celebrated as a major work, it contains many iconic characteristics, including its main theme being introduced by the soloist right from the beginning of the first movement and dramatic double stops throughout. Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 bears testament to the composer’s synthesis of symphony with song, the final movement featuring a soprano singing “Das himmlische Leben” (The Heavenly Life), an uplifting portrayal of the afterlife. Mahler once said each of his symphonies is “its own world”, a glorious kingdom in which to immerse ourselves.
