Richard Danielpour: “Lacrimae Beati” (2009)
Mozart: Requiem, K. 626 (Süssmayr)
One of choral music’s undisputed masterpieces, Mozart’s unfinished Requiem (completed by his student Franz Süssmayr) stemmed from an anonymous commission. Mozart was terminally ill when he began the work, and several movements existed only in sketches. Still, his musical genius shines through (especially in the opening Kyrie, which he fully orchestrated). This concert also features an early symphony by the teenaged Mozart, along with Lacrimae Beati (“Tears of the Blessed One”) by the contemporary composer Richard Danielpour for string orchestra, a tribute to the Requiem. The opening eight bars of the Lacrimosa that inspired Danielpour were reputedly the last notes Mozart ever penned.
