Works of art live long after the death of their creators. In March 1827, when Beethoven died, a part of his legacy were forty sketches for his Symphony No. 10. In 2021, a historic restoration and reimagination took place in Bonn—Beethoven’s birthplace—where a team of experts in machine learning and musicology used AI to finish what the composer left us. Another “unfinished” work that captured music lovers’ imagination is Mahler’s Tenth, of which the orchestration of the Adagio was completed by the composer. Russian virtuoso Denis Matsuev performs Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto to round out this programme in which we probe the meaning of “genius” and “posterity”.
