On the eve of this year’s Holy Week, we invite you on a spiritual journey with this Baroque masterpiece depicting Christ’s crucifixion. Around the world, whether in churches (for Good Friday vespers) or concert halls, singers traditionally gather during this season to perform Bach’s Passions – the grand-scale St. Matthew Passion for double chorus, or the more intimate St. John Passion renowned for its dramatically intricate choral writing. Through alternating recitatives (sung narration in declamatory style), arias and choruses (including familiar seasonal hymns and chorales), these works convey profound drama and emotional depth, continuing to amaze audiences with Bach’s masterful command of large-scale choral and orchestral composition.
