In 1897, at the age of 23, Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff published his Symphony No. 1 with great aspiration. But its premiere was a fiasco, which threw the composer into depression. This incident left a strong mark in the first half of his life. In 1927, at the age of 53, Rachmaninoff released his Piano Concerto No. 4 after a ten-year hiatus from writing, resuming then composition.

Hungarian conductor Gabor Kali is a former 1st prize winner at the 1st Hong Kong International Conducting Competition in 2018 – and has served as Assistant Music Director and Principal Conductor of the State Opera Nürnberg since 2015. He will lead Macao Orchestra in collaboration with Albanian-born French pianist Marie-Ange Nguci who is known in the music scene for her extraordinary skill, outstanding musicality, and foresight, to present three sets of imposing yet ‘unloved’ Rachmaninoff’ key works that had a profound impact on the composer himself. This concert is a great chance to experience the essence of Russian romantic music and understand the legendary pianist and composer’s inner world. Not to be missed!
