Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) was one of Gustav Mahler’s last completed works and was finished one year after being diagnosed with congenital heart disease in 1907. The lyrics translated by Hans Bethge are from a set of poems written during the Tang dynasty titled “Die chinesische Flöte” (The Chinese Flute) by Li Tai-Po, Mong Kao-Yen, Wang Wei and Tchang Tsi. This gigantic synthesis of symphony and song has often been considered as his farewell to life and since the premiere of the work in 1911 in Munich, Germany, it has never ceased to move countless audiences. As November 20th of this year marks the 110th anniversary of the premiere of “Das Lied der Erde”, two outstanding Chinese singers who perform regularly throughout Europe and Asia – Liu Siman (Alto) and Ren Demin (Tenor) – will join the Macao Orchestra together with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra to perform this epic not-to-be-missed masterpiece under the baton of Maestro Lu Jia in a rendition of Mahler’s “East meets West” soul searching artistic concept.
