Printemps by a relatively young Debussy (at age 25) captures the luminescence of French impressionism. Cast in two movements, the pastel palette of the first gives way to a sprightly dance. In contrast, Shostakovich\u2019s Violin Concerto No. 2 (1967), written specifically for virtuoso David Oistrakh, celebrates the violinist\u2019s singing, lyrical tone with mesmerising, long-breathed melodies and three extended cadenzas, a friendly nod indeed from the composer to his dear friend. Stravinsky\u2019s Symphony in Three Movements, written during the Second World War, reveals the composer in supreme command of his distinctive modernist language. Premiered in 1946, it was Stravinsky\u2019s first major work in his adopted United States of America, where he also made his conducting debut.<\/p>\n
