Macao welcomes French piano royalty Jean-Yves Thibaudet performing Saint- Sa\u00ebns\u2019s final piano concerto, written in Luxor, where the composer spent his winters (hence its nickname. \u201cEgyptian\u201d). Premiered at Paris\u2019s Salle Pleyel in 1896, its musical influences include Javanese gamelan. Timed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the composer-pianist\u2019s debut at the venue, the event was received with adulation. The second half of the programme is devoted to a scandalous work that also premiered in Paris. In 1913, it nearly caused a riot at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es. Even Saint-Sa\u00ebns couldn\u2019t contain his shock. The dissonances and unconventional instrumental technique that angered so many, however, are now celebrated as having opened the world to musical modernism.<\/p>\n
