Cast in two movements\, the pastel palette of the first gives way to a sprightly dance. In contrast\, Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 2 (1967)\, written specifically for virtuoso David Oistrakh\, celebrates the violinist’s singing\, lyrical tone with mesmerising\, long-breathed melodies and three extended cadenzas\, a friendly nod indeed from the composer to his dear friend. Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements\, written during the Second World War\, reveals the composer in supreme command of his distinctive modernist language.
