Barely a year after Mozart’s death in 1791\, Beethoven became a permanent resident. For this all-Beethoven concert\, led by Vienna-born conductor Sascha Goetzel\, the Macao Orchestra performs three works composed during the first decade of the 19th century: “Leonore” Overture No. 1 (discarded by the composer before the staged premiere of Fidelio\, his sole opera initially entitled Leonore)\, Symphony No. 5 (“Fate”) and the Piano Concerto No. 5 (“Emperor”) featuring soloist Barry Douglas\, laureate of the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. The latter two works chronicle a momentous and difficult period when the composer was already suffering a decline in hearing.
