Now celebrated as a major work\, it contains many iconic characteristics\, including its main theme being introduced by the soloist right from the beginning of the first movement and dramatic double stops throughout. Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 bears testament to the composer’s synthesis of symphony with song\, the final movement featuring a soprano singing “Das himmlische Leben” (The Heavenly Life)\, an uplifting portrayal of the afterlife. The passionate relationship between soloist and orchestra is more like lovers than just good friends\, especially in the harmonically rich middle movement. Schumann composed his “Rhenish” Symphony while living near the scenic River Rhine.
