Message from the Music Director and Principal Conductor

The 2020-21 season will be the 37th season of the Macao Orchestra (OM). Over the years, thanks to great support from the Macao SAR Government, the Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau and Macao generous public and with the concerted efforts of every artist and staff member of OM, we have been arduously working towards growing the orchestra into a top ensemble in Asia. In the last fruitful season, OM successfully completed tours in Portugal, Beijing and Zhuhai, in the Greater Bay Area, besides cooperating with many top international artists. Audiences and critics alike praised Macao Orchestra for its overall performance quality, selection and interpretation of the repertoire.
In the last season, due to the Novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak, basically the orchestra could only deliver half season’s performances. As a matter of fact, however, Macao Orchestra could still play a positive role in society, as we have carried on with the online “Classical Music at home” concert series non-stop, and our art administration team has been actively preparing for the new season.
In the new season, themed on “Footprints of Masters”, we will review together great footprints left behind by classical music masters such as Saint-Saëns, Dvořák, Bartók, Bruch, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Verdi, Mozart and Piazzolla, by performing their most classic masterpieces. I feel honoured to be able to continually work with global preeminent conductors, soloists, and arts groups, some of whom are my old partners while others are new friends. Among them are Vadim Repin, renowned Russian violin genius, Maria Agresta, Italy’s best soprano today and Marco Berti. Regardless whether it is a new or renewed collaboration, the aim is to ignite new sparks through these artistic encounters and collisions, to make music and our orchestra shine in order to bring unforgettable musical experiences to Macao fans and to Macao Orchestra itself.
Music is passed down and spread through continuous learning and exchange. I will continue to present “When Music Speaks” in varied forms, and will personally host the Pre-Concert Talk so as to share music with fans at close range. With the full support of the MSAR Government, we will continue to reach new milestones and as a living name card, Macao Orchestra will present to the world our tiny city’s brilliant charm.
