Eine florentinische Tragödie is an opera in one act by Alexander von Zemlinsky to a libretto adapted by the composer Oscar Wilde’s unfinished play. It is also the most popular and most frequently performed opera. This opera narrates the story of a merchant who finds his wife has a lover, ends up killing the latter in a duel. It is then that the wife finally understands her husband’s deep love for her, but tragedy is already inevitable. The thrilling and highly tense plot combined with refined romantic music make this opera exceptional, which no music fans will want to miss. The post-Romantic Austrian composer, Gustav Mahler, was celebrated for his symphonies. His work Songs of a Wayfarer, to be presented in this concert, was written in the late 1880s, and is known as the favourite masterpiece of the Post-Romantic Era. The concert features young talented Korean singers – soprano Myung-Joo Lee and baritones Paul Kong and Seung Min Seong – and tenor Erik Nelson Werner from the United States, whose brilliant performances will successfully close this concert season of the Macao Orchestra.
